Introducing the new Publishing Tool!

We are excited to share that the Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (CSPA), with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and guidance from New Society Publishers and ECW Press, has launched a new feature in the Creative Green Tools Canada (CG Tools)— the Publishing Tool.

A new tool is now availble on the Creative Green Tools!

  • The "Publishing" footprint tool is a new addition to CG Tools designed to simplify the process of estimating the carbon footprint of book runs.goes here

  •  The Publishing Tool tracks:

    • Production materials (paper, cover stock)

    • Transportation emissions (from production to distribution)

    It also supports the input of custom emissions data received from a lifecycle footprint analysis (LCA), to keep everything in one place.

  • With the Publishing Tool, users can:

    • Compare the carbon footprint of different scenarios associated with your choices of materials, and different types of transportation for production and distribution.

    • Explore other footprinting options within the CG Tools to test the impact of your book tours and office operations.

  • The new publishing footprint option in the CG Tools is a simplified version of the life cycle analysis (LCA) found in The Book Carbon Footprint Calculator 1.0, a detailed lifecycle analysis tool created through a collaboration between New Society Publishers and ECW Press.

    The CSPA acknowledges the invaluable contributions of Jen Knoch from ECW Press and EJ Hurst from New Society Publishers, who have supported the development of this new tool as part of our advisory committee since January 2024. Their expertise and guidance have helped shape the Publishing Tool into a user-friendly resource that stays true to its core purpose of tracking, while also making it more accessible for publishers.

  • You’ll need basic information like:

    1. Book size and paper details

    2. Transportation distances and methods

  • You can access the publishing tool in 3 steps:

    1. Create or log in to your CG Tools account.

    2. Create a new project.

    3. Select "Publishing" as the area you want to track.

Nous sommes ravis de partager que le Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts (CSPA), avec le soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada et la collaboration de New Society Publishers et ECW Press, a lancé une nouvelle fonctionnalité dans les outils Creative Green Canada (outils CG) —  l'outil « Empreinte de publication éditoriale »

  • L'outil « Empreinte de publication éditoriale » est une nouvelle fonctionnalité des outils CG conçue pour simplifier l’estimation de l’empreinte carbone de leurs publications.

  •  L'outil « Empreinte de publication éditoriale » permet de suivre:

    • Les matériaux de production (papier, couverture)

    • Les émissions de transport (de la production à la distribution)

    Vous pouvez saisir des émissions personnalisées issues d'une analyse du cycle de vie (ACV) afin de centraliser toutes les informations au même endroit.

  • Avec l'outil « Empreinte de publication éditoriale » , les utilisateurs peuvent:

    • Comparer l'empreinte carbone de différents scénarios liés à leurs choix de matériaux et aux différents types de transport pour la production et la distribution.

    • Explorer d'autres options complémentaires de calcul au sein des outils CG pour évaluer l'empreinte carbone de leurs tournées de promotion de livres et de leurs opérations de bureau.

  • La nouvelle option « Empreinte de publication éditoriale » dans les outils CG est une version simplifiée de l’analyse du cycle de vie (ACV) présente dans le calculateur Book Carbon Footprint Calculator 1.0, un outil détaillé d’analyse du cycle de vie développé suite à une collaboration entre New Society Publishers et ECW Press.

    La CSPA reconnaît les contributions inestimables de Jen Knoch d’ECW Press et EJ Hurst de New Society Publishers, qui ont offert des conseils précieux et soutenu le développement de cet outil en tant que membres de notre comité consultatif depuis janvier 2024. Leur expertise et leurs recommandations ont permis de façonner l’outil pour en faire une ressource qui respecte son objectif principal de suivi, tout en le rendant plus accessible pour les éditeurs.

  • Vous aurez besoin d'informations de base telles que:

    • Les détails et dimensions du livre et du papier

    • Les distances et modes de transport

  • Vous pouvez accédez à l’outil de publication en 3 étapes :

    1. Créez ou connectez-vous à votre compte des outils CG.

    2. Créez un nouveau projet.

    3. Sélectionnez « Publication éditoriale » comme type d'empreinte.
